As per the new report given by SparkToro and Followerwonk claims that about 19.42% of active Twitter accounts are spam or fake. This figure is about four times of the official estimation given by the Twitter in Q4 of 2021. Moreover, due to the Elon Musk, fake Twitter accounts have become a hot topic recently.
According to the company, spam and fake accounts consists of less than 5% of its user base. But questions have been raised by many experts about the methodology that Twitter Uses to calculate these types of accounts on its platform.
Not only this, but Elon Musk also tweeted that his Twitter acquisition deal is on hold, as he wants to confirm the percentage of spam or fake accounts from the Twitter user base. Following his tweet, many publications used SparkToro’s Fake Followers tool for the analysis of Elon Musk’s Followers.

And the result was shocking, after the analysis it was found that about half of Musk’s Twitter followers are fake which accounts to about 93.4M. However, a question might be on your mind that what is a Fake or Spam Twitter account? Well, SparkToro have a precise definition about this, and it is:

SparkToro and Followerwonk has jointly applied for spam/fake account analysis process to about 5 different accounts. They have analysed the Twitter followers of @ElonMusk, @Twitter, and their accounts.
What happened was, a random sample of 44,058 active accounts were also analysed and the result came out was about 8,555 accounts were fake. According to them, they believe that the dataset better represents about active Twitter users that are likely to be spam or fake.

Elon Musk have 70% of the spam or fake Followers:
According to the analysis done by SparkToro 70.23% of Elon Musk’s followers are likely to be spam or fake accounts. This figure is above and beyond the median for fake followers. Also, the other analysis of Elon Musk’s 26.8M active followers indicated 23.42% fake user accounts.
