Well in this post I will talk about Web 3.0? There might be several questions that may be running on your mind. But believe me, after reading this post completely you will clearly understand what are Web 1.0, Web 2.0 and also Web 3.0. It is a very common thing that we all know that Technology Keeps on changing from time to time. This whole World Wide Web(or WWW in short) is also a part of constantly evolving technology.
Web 1.0 refers to the first version of the World Wide Web. In addition to that, the current phase of the Web is Web 2.0. And the future of the Web that is yet to come is Web 3.0 and it is in the early stages. So let’s delve into each of these 3 versions of the Web without wasting any further time.
Web 1.0 :
When the web came first into existence, there were very few creators. And the majority of the internet users were content consumers. And the type of website was none other than static. Let me clarify with you about websites and web pages first. A website is nothing but a collection of related web pages. And with the help of the HTML Language, we can create simple web pages.
So now let’s understand the meaning of static websites. I want to put a simple definition of it in front of you. So in simple terms, those websites which contain web pages of fixed content is termed as Static Websites. I hope now the term static website is clear to you. So let’s know more about web 1.0 as this is crucial in the understanding of Web3 also known as Web 3.0.
Moreover, during the age of Web 1.0, personal websites were very common. And the websites were either hosted by web servers run by ISP ( or Internet Service Provider) or with free web hosting services. Also, the advertisements on websites were banned. Not only that, users were charged according to the pages viewed by them. We can also say that Web 1.0 was nothing but the content delivery network. In that phase, the content was showcased with the help of static websites. So now let’s move on to the next phase of the web which is Web 2.0.
Web 2.0 :
After Web 1.0 came Web 2.0 which offered dynamic content on the website. As I have mentioned earlier the current phase of the web is web 2. In this current phase, many content creators joined on the web and the number is still increasing. In this phase, there are various types of content in many categories. If you want to read an article on a particular topic there are several options and that too in different languages.
Before Web 2.0 the content on the websites were just present on the web and navigation was difficult. But at the start of this phase information and data were sorted in a particular order. And this become possible because of Google and MSN. Users were able to interact with the content creators with the help of the comment system. Data presented to the users were changed dynamically based upon the user’s feedback.
More About Web 2.0 :
Furthermore, Web 2.0 introduced several tools. For example Blogs, podcasts, social networking, Online voting on content to name a few. In this phase, the opinions, feedback, etc of the users matter the most. Moreover, in this phase, the online activities of the users are being tracked. And internet users see advertisements based on their activities. To better understand this I can help you to relate.
Suppose you want to purchase new sports shoes. And you talk about it on social media or maybe you like posts related to shoes. And what will happen next? So the ads related to sports shoes will be served to you. This is one scenario and there can be several others depending upon the context. And I can say that this kind of situation might have happened to you.
And in this era of Web 2.0, content creators got a plethora of platforms to share their content. They can publish articles or maybe post videos on certain topics. But after uploading their own content on these platforms they lose overall control over their content. Like for example If I have posted a video on Facebook. So If that video is not meeting some policies created by the platform itself, then that video of mine will be taken down.
These are the problems in the current Web 2.0 and to overcome that the concept of Web 3.0 came. So let’s talk about Web 3.0.
Web 3.0 :
The concept of Web 3.0 is still in its early phase. And Web 3.0 will be mainly based on Blockchain technology. Like in this current phase of web 2.0 the user data are stored on centralised servers. As the photos, videos, etc which I will share on the Facebook platform it will be stored on the Facebook servers. But there is a twist in Web 3.0, we will be owners of our own content. Moreover, our data will be distributed over a network of computers. Instead of having it on centralised servers.
These things are just projections based on the current scenario. And will be uncovered in the coming time. Another thing that may be possible is that we will need only one account for all activities. Just like for shopping, for booking tickets and so on. Again I want you to remind that it is in its early stages. This has been mainly becoming possible because of Cryptocurrencies, Blockchains and NFTs.
